Creature comforts is all well and good, but happiness is not the material conditions and values, happiness is in the attitude.
That is why some of the happiest people on the planet are the inhabitants of the Piraha tribe living near a tributary of the Amazon in the territory of modern Brazil.

The tribe now numbers about 450 people. They are self-sufficient and not really in contact with other tribes and strangers, but not aggressive and can get scientists, journalists or ordinary tourists who are interested to watch their life.
Locals have no hierarchy, separation of families and other social and moral conventions.
No ownership — everything is in the village, belongs to all members of the community.
