Geologists discovered the volcano, which could kill 100 million people
MOSCOW, 15 Feb — RIA Novosti. Geologists from the University of Kobe discovered off the coast of Japan SUPERVOLCANO containing 34 cubic kilometres of magma, which in the case of the eruption could kill 100 million people. A study published in the journal Scientific repots.
Scientists have studied Kikai Caldera — the crater of the volcano, whose eruption is 7,3 thousand years ago led to the destruction of civilization in the South of Japan.
The researchers found inside of the volcano dome with a radius of 10 kilometers and a height of 600 meters, containing magma.
After examining the bumps on the surface of the seabed, the study authors concluded that the dome is growing. It is, in their opinion, may result in a powerful eruption that will cause a tsunami capable of reaching the coast of China, South and North America.
In addition, the air will be thrown a significant amount of ash which will lead to a “volcanic winter” in some areas of Japan. According to scientists, the probability of such event is 1%.
