Working at night increases the chances of developing cancer in women, say scientists

MOSCOW, 9 Jan — RIA Novosti. Women working second shift, it is much more likely to suffer from breast cancer, skin and digestive organs compared with other representatives of the weaker sex, doctors say in an article published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.

“Our research shows that working the night shift really is a risk factor for the development of the most common forms of cancer in women. The collected data will help to understand how to protect them and also they indicate that already now these employees need to undergo regular screening,” said Suela MA (Xuelei Ma) from the University of Sichuan in Chengdu (China).

News12 symptoms of breast cancer: what to look for?

In 2007, the world health organization published a report in which its experts stated that the night work leads to the development of disturbances in the biorhythms of the body and increases the chances of developing cancer, including breast cancer. These findings, as it was argued, scientists were obtained during the observation of the incidence of breast cancer in animals, whose cycles of sleep and wakefulness was broken.

Later, these conclusions were questioned — the medical team from Oxford have analyzed the statistics of three major projects on observations of the health of women, and found no hints that the night’s work makes them more vulnerable to cancer.
