The Council of bishops is allowed to perform marriages between godparents
Moscow. 2 Dec. INTERFAX.RU — the Council of bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church, concluded on Saturday in Moscow, made a change in the practice of marriage between God-father and mother.
“Marriages between heirs can be done with the blessing of the diocesan Bishop,” said the head of the Synodal Department for Church and society and the media Vladimir Legoyda on Saturday at a press conference, quoting a fragment of a resolution of the Council.
As explained in this press Secretary of Patriarch Kirill, the priest of Alexander Volkov, earlier marriages between godparents many dioceses were banned by the ruling hierarchs, and in the course of the Council’s work on this topic was conducted a lively discussion. In particular, this practice is especially not accepted by the Ukrainian bishops, so the wording of the Ordinance provides that such a marriage need to take the blessing of the Bishop.
Yesterday it was reported that the Council of bishops decided that when making a wedding will be considered and marriages previously registered in bodies the registry office.
“Not recognized possible wedding of marriages registered in accordance with state law, but the relevant canonical norms (for example, if you exceed the allowed by the Church rules the number of previous marriages, one of wanting to get married or if the persons wishing to marry, invalid degrees of kinship)”, — stated in the document adopted at the Council Friday.
