USA named a contender for the Kuril Islands and southern Sakhalin

Kuzminkov emphasizes that there is no document or contract under which control of these territories were transferred to the Soviet Union. “Today’s Russia as the successor state of the USSR owns them not de jure, and on historical grounds — because no one else filed their claims,” he says.
Following the end of world war II between Moscow and Tokyo never signed a peace Treaty. The main obstacle to his signing was the unresolved territorial dispute over the southern Kuril Islands — Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai.
The Japanese side calls the Southern Kuril Islands the “Northern territories” and over them does not recognize Russian sovereignty. Moscow, in turn, does not recognize the fact of the territorial dispute.
