Archaeologists have found a mural at excavation V, the area of Pompeii. Prior to that, the area was investigated only in the late XIX-early XX centuries, and dug up about a quarter of its territory. Only in 2018, scientists discovered in the V district, some election slogans, lettering, which allowed more precise Dating of the day of the eruption of mount Vesuvius and numerous frescoes.
A new finding was the picture of copulation of Leda and the Swan — according to archaeologists, this story was very popular in Pompeii. According to Greek legend, Zeus, struck by the beauty of the Queen of Sparta Leda, he turned himself into a Swan and seduced her (in another version — raped). Husband of Leda, too, did not leave her unattended. As a result, the Leda conceived four children, Helen and Pollux, we meet from Zeus, and castor and Clytemnestra by her husband Tyndareus. All four of them became characters of other myths. Elena, who was considered the most beautiful woman in the world, was married to king Menelaus of Sparta, and its relationship with the Trojan Prince Paris was the cause of the Trojan war. Clytemnestra became the wife of the king of Mycenae Agamemnon and when he returned after the conquest of Troy, killed him. But castor and Pollux made a few feats, including participated in the campaign of the Argonauts.
The fresco of Leda and the Swan was found in the V area of Pompeii, in the house, standing on the street of Vesuvius. She was in the bedroom off the entrance hallway. Summer, scientists found in this fresco depicting the God Priapus holding in her hand scales.
