The Palace of Dar al Hajar is one of the main attractions of Yemen. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that it was built on top of a cliff in the valley of Wadi Dahr, about 15 kilometers from the capital. The castle is also called the Palace of the Imam.

Unusual 7-storey Palace with many rooms, halls, and private 275-meter-deep well (which for the desert is considered a true luxury) was built by Imam Yahya in the 1930s years and served as the summer residence of the religious leader.

However, the building that you see today, is supplemented by a reconstruction of the ancient Palace. In the middle ages it was destroyed by the Turks, and in 1786 rebuilt. After the Palace became the property of Imam Yahya, it was extended and restored in accordance with its ancient original.

A few years after the murder of an Imam in 1948, the Dar al Hajar became the property of the state and was converted into a Museum. Today the castle on the rock is one of the main attractions of Yemen, thousands of tourists from all over the world.
