Monday, November 26, President of Ukraine introduced to the Verkhovna Rada a bill on approving the decree “On the introduction of martial law in Ukraine” in connection with the incident. He proposed to introduce martial law for 60 days, as proposed by the Council of national security and defence (NSDC) of Ukraine, as of 30 days so as not to interfere with the presidential elections on 31 March 2019. the Ukrainian leader also demanded from the Russian authorities to release the detained ships and their crews.
According to the law of Ukraine “On legal regime of martial law” during martial law can’t be elections at all levels and can be banned peaceful gatherings, rallies, demonstrations and other events. If the powers of the incumbent President of the country end during the martial law, “his powers continue until the inauguration of the newly elected President of Ukraine, elected after the lifting of martial law”.
