Looks like the creepiest place in Paris (photos)
Even terrifying.
The French capital is often called the city of love. Cozy cafes, Eiffel tower and street artists, located in Montmartre, associated with a solid romance. But there is in Paris and its dark side.
One of the most eerie places in the city can be safely called the Paris catacombswhich are hidden from the eyes of tourists deep underground.
It’s a network of tunnels under Paris with a length of 1.5 km. Even in the tenth century there were quarries here. In the middle of the XIII century the monks of a nearby monastery began to use caves as wine cellars, and at the same time continued underground mining of limestone.

Meanwhile, urban possessions have expanded in the XVII century the quarry was already a part of Paris. By that time in the city sharply there was a question about graves. In 1780, the collapsed wall that separated the cemetery of the Innocents residential areas, resulting in the basements of the houses were filled with the remains of burials. Then the cemetery was closed, and in Paris, officially forbidden to bury the dead.
The solution was found easiest to build a “hidden” tomb in the tunnels under the city.

Now in the Paris catacombs rest the remains of six million people. Skulls and bones are carefully disinfected, processed and stacked in the form of walls and columns. Sometimes they are made in the form of quirky mosaics. But it looks creepy.
