Scientists told about the new dangers of sugar
MOSCOW, 27 Jan — RIA Novosti. Diabetes and high blood sugar levels associated with long lasting cognitive disorders, found a research group from China and the UK. The results of a study published in the journal Diabetologia.
Control of blood sugar can prevent further deterioration of the brain, scientists say.
The study involved more than five thousand elderly people. In the course of the research was analyzed the relationship between glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) that reflects average blood sugar, and cognitive disorders over a period of about ten years. It was found that the higher the HbA1c, the faster the cognitive decline. The experts took into account cholesterol levels, body mass index, mental state, alcohol and nicotine addiction, chronic diseases, education level, marital status and many other characteristics.
The results of the research have shown that people suffering from diabetes or having a predisposition thereto, was observed accelerated cognitive decline.
“Our findings show a direct link between HbA1c levels and cognitive deficits, regardless of diabetic status. Future research is necessary in order to in the long term to determine the effect of maintaining an optimal level of blood glucose on cognitive dysfunction in people with diabetes,” the study says.
