Physical strength correlate with cognitive abilities

The results of a study conducted at the University of Manchester and involving almost half a million participants, showed that physically strong people may have better mental abilities. These same insights have not lost the urgency and for patients with schizophrenia. The article was published in Schizophrenia Bulletin.

In order to find a correlation of the physical state of the organism with the cognitive sphere, researchers from the University of Manchester and Research Institute of health NICM, University of Western Sydney, used data from the British Biobank (UK Biobank), which was 475 397 people from the General population and 1162 of the person with schizophrenia.

The results showed that the physically strongest members better cope with the tests on mental activity of the brain.

Scientists have chosen five of the most revealing tests: tests to check reaction time, logical problem solving and a few different jobs in memory (visual, numerical and prospective). Healthy and physically strong people, in comparison with those who had a less developed body, had a good performance on all the evaluated parameters (especially all kinds of memory). People with mental illness, but physically strong was distinguished visual memory and reaction time.

We considered many factors, including age, gender, body mass and education, and our research confirms that people who are physically stronger, do tend to the better functioning of the brain.Joseph Vertueuse issledovatelskoeI all the time feel tired: what’s wrong with me?

“We see a clear connection between muscular strength and mental well-being. But we need more studies to test whether muscle training improves brain function”.

Previous research groups have shown that aerobic exercise can actually improve the condition of the brain. However, the benefit of exercise on mental abilities yet to be explored fully.
