Ex-South Korean President Park Geun-Hye was sentenced to 24 years in prison

SEOUL, April 6. /TASS/. Former President of the Republic of Korea Park Geun-Hye was sentenced to 24 years in prison on 18 counts. This is stated in released on Friday a sentence of the Central district court of Seoul.

The court upheld most of the presented Park Geun-Hye charges, including revealing state secrets, extortion and receiving bribes and abuse of power.

The sentencing for the first time in the history of the country took place on live television, despite the protests of the defence. The Park Geun-Hye refused to attend the final court hearing. Her lawyers have the right during the week, appeal to a higher court.

The political scandal surrounding former leader of the country broke out in October 2016, when the press appeared information about the impact on her by a close friend named Choi sung-SIL. The investigation revealed that for several years past has been devoted to the details of public administration and interfered with the course of political decision-making at the highest level. In addition, a friend of ex-President put pressure on a number of major companies to enumerate them tens of millions of dollars in controlled assets.

It was argued that Park Geun-Hye was involved in a corruption scheme Choi sung-SIL, or at least was aware of what is happening. In early 2017, Park Geun-Hye was dismissed as a result of impeachment.

In February 2018, the court found Choi sung-SIL guilty on charges of corruption, extortion and abuse of power and sentenced to 20 years in prison. She must pay a fine in the amount of $16.6 million
