They remained no less than 500 thousand.
In Albania to this day preserved a large number of bunkers of the cold war.
Today it is a familiar part of the urban and rural landscapes of the country. They are literally everywhere: from high-rise buildings, roads, beaches and cemeteries in the mountains and along the border. Some of the bunkers abandoned — nearby cattle grazing. In other staged cafes and restaurants, houses and sheds, swimming pools and water tanks.

In times of Enver Hoxha, who led the Communist Albania from 1941 to 1985, in a country with a population of less than 3 million people have been built up to 700 thousand bunkers. They had to “save” Albania from the “hostile” world.

Massive construction began in the 1970s. By this time, Enver Hoxha managed to break diplomatic relations with many former international allies and seriously feared a nuclear war. The construction lasted to 1989. Concrete plants worked in all municipalities of the country 24 hours a day.
