Where the modern cave city (photo)
This is a very popular tourist destination.
Matmata is a popular tourist Berber town in southern Tunisia. Its population is less than 2 thousand people.
The locals live in a traditional semi-subterranean dwellings in the form of deep dugouts. Around each dug-dug caves that serve as rooms. In the 1970s the town was established and dwellings of the modern type, but most Berbers prefer to live in the old way.

It is believed that the first such house was built in the Roman era. The Romans sent troops here the right to kill anyone you need. Local inhabitants were forced to withdraw from their homes and dig yourself a cave in which to hide.
About town of little known, but in 1967 started heavy rains, and the houses of the aborigines were flooded. They appealed to the authorities asking for assistance. Assistance was provided, and cave city wrote in the newspaper. Since the region is tourism, which began to bring local residents a good profit.
