Germany considers US sanctions against Nord Stream 2 unreasonable

Head of the Federal Republic of Germany Schwezig: US sanctions against Nord Stream 2 are absolutely unreasonable

Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Manuela Schwezig, in an interview with Spiegel, considered it unreasonable to prepare new US sanctions against Nord Stream 2. In her opinion, the gas pipeline has nothing to do with foreign policy issues.

The head of one of the regions of Germany added that she was confused by the newly raised topic of restrictions by Congress in light of the fact that the German government reached an agreement with the American authorities that there will be no new sanctions against German companies.

“Permits for the pipeline were obtained through legal means. It cannot be that there were threats of sanctions between friends. This is absolutely unreasonable, and I really hope that these attempts to challenge the agreement between the federal government and the US government will stop, “Schwezig emphasized.

She added that the construction of Nord Stream 2 should not be confused with foreign policy questions and concluded that the government of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern supports this project because it is necessary.

On December 1, it became known that members of the Democratic Party faction in the US Senate agreed to consider a package of amendments to the country's draft defense budget, which suggests sanctions for participation in the certification of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
