The first cases of infection with a new variant of COVID-19, according to the authorities, were recorded in four foreign citizens who arrived in the country on a diplomatic mission at the end of November. They left the state a few days later.
“The diplomats came from a number of countries – from the countries of their origin, the countries where they work. They traveled through several other states to get to Botswana. (…) Some of them were in Europe. Others are in other places, “Masisi said, stressing that scientists cannot yet indicate the source of the new strain.
The President criticized the bans of some countries on air travel and called them a manifestation of” almost imperialist thinking. ” He pointed out that such actions are “inhuman, degrading and unacceptable.”
The strain under the code B.1.1.529, which was given the name omicron, was identified in South Africa on November 11. The country's health minister said that it is easily tolerated by vaccinated patients, however, according to available data, it can bypass the immunity of those who have recovered from other variants of the virus.
At the moment, the omicron strain has appeared in more than 20 countries around the world. On December 3, it became known about the infection of a resident of Australia, who was fully vaccinated and did not travel outside the country.
