Paul Whelan, serving time for espionage, accused the IK-17 leadership of corruption

American Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov with a request to conduct an investigation into corruption in the Mordovian correctional colony No. 17 (IK-17). This is reported by TASS with reference to the prisoner's brother David.

“Corruption knows no boundaries here. We are talking about theft, extortion, revenge … “Whelan said in a telephone conversation with his brother.

According to him, the colony leadership covers employees who interfere with the work of lawyers and forge documents. He noted that there are even rats in IK-17.

Earlier, the head of the Mordovian colony, Colonel Vladimir Denisov, was detained for extorting a bribe. He demanded that the convict buy into his office a modern smart TV, a set of satellite TV and an expensive mobile phone.

Paul Whelan was sentenced in Russia to 16 years in prison on charges of espionage. He has citizenship of the United States, Great Britain, Canada and Ireland, the defense wants him to serve time at home. However, the Court of Appeal upheld the refusal of the Supreme Court of Mordovia to consider the issue of extradition of the convicted person to the United States.
