Putin held talks with the President of the European Council

President of the Russian Federation Putin discussed the situation on the border of Belarus by phone with the head of the European Council Michel, the situation on the border between Belarus and Poland, TASS reports with reference to the Kremlin press service.

The Russian leader and the head of the European Council in the conversation focused on the importance of resolving the migration crisis on the basis of international humanitarian law. Putin believes that the sanctions imposed on Belarus are counterproductive.

In addition, Putin and Michel managed to discuss the situation in Ukraine, Karabakh, Afghanistan and Libya.

Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that communication between the presidents of Russia and Belarus Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko is not enough to resolve the migration crisis, it is necessary to continue contacts between Minsk and the EU.

The migration crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border escalated in November. Several thousand refugees tried to break through the border, after which the Polish security forces used special equipment. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko ordered to place migrants in a logistics warehouse. In turn, the Polish side said that some refugees are still trying to enter the country, and came up with an initiative to pay for the return of all migrants to their homeland.
