Looks like a Mexican town in the middle of the water (photos)

It is often called the local Venice.

Mexcaltitan de Uribe or just Mexcaltitan is a unique village of the island, located in the state of Nayarit in Mexico.

This island is quite small — the length of the longest side is 400 metres away. Residents here are also a bit to about 900 people.

Is Mexcaltitan in the middle of a swampy area, where it is surrounded by mangrove forests. The nearest large town of Santiago Ixcuintla is located in 35 km and to reach the island only by boat.

The name of the village was obtained through the alcoholic beverage mezcal (made from fermented agave juice). Translated from the Nahuatl “Mexcaltitan” translates as “teeming with mescal”.

The main occupation of the local population — fishing. Fish and shrimp are taking to sell in the major city nearby. But in the rainy season, which lasts from August to September, Mexcaltitan turns into the real Venice — the village gets flooded and streets turned into canals to move which is possible only by boat.

By the way, according to one legend, Mexcaltitan is the legendary Aztlán, the ancestral home of the Aztecs. It is believed that from here in 1091, they went in search of a better place to live and settled in a half thousand kilometers — in Tenochtitlan (modern Mexico city). However, scientific confirmation of this version has not received.
