From eagles to bazookas: how in the world are struggling with the invasion of the drones
The means used to combat drones.
The incident with the two drones, which led to the closure of London Gatwick airport for more than a day, has forced society to think about how the world is ready to confront the threat posed by drones. As it turned out, the whole world has already adopted rules against drones, but in every country to this problem a different approach.
Specially trained birds
The technique was first proposed and implemented by the Dutch police. This decision is interesting because, for the anti-flyers uses a completely low-tech live birds of prey.
Police trained eagles, so they rushed to hostile drones and grab the propeller with its claws, which immediately leads to the conclusion device failure.
The trainers were assured that the eagles perceive drones as prey, and therefore does not attack other birds or people when the need arises to release them.
In addition, the eagle does not need the operator to control its operation — the predator grabs his hunting instinct to shoot down the drone.
At the end of 2017, it became known that the Netherlands decided to abandon the program because of the cost and complexity of training eagles. In the United States, however, interested in this experiment and began the study of the habits and hunting tactics of other birds of prey such as falcons. The us army believes that the data collected will help to develop a protective system against drones, which will also effectively deal with flying targets and a live Falcon.
