The President of Russia Vladimir Putin supported the proposal of pianist Denis Matsuev to declare the Year of music in 2023 and to hold a series of cultural events this year marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of composer Sergei Rachmaninoff.

“With regard to events associated with the name Rachmaninoff, we need to think how to organize it. What you need to do something, it is exactly, we still discuss and think. You offer 2023, time to eat. Will have to think about it and celebrate,” said Putin at a meeting of the Council for culture and the arts.

Matsuev suggested “to revive the Rachmaninoff competition, which has existed for years, but now does not exist” in three specialties — for pianists, conductors and composers. He also asked the President to consider the purchase of the estate of Senar in Switzerland, where Rachmaninoff lived in the 1930-ies, and where we could create a memorial to the composer.

Commenting on the request of the musician, Putin admitted that earlier “about buying asked some colleagues and even acquaintances, it was two or four years ago, but they faced almost impossible to negotiate with anyone”. “If the situation has changed now, let’s get back to this issue,” he added.
