In Kiev opened the unity Council, which is attended by the Church hierarchy, priests and laity.

They are three Orthodox churches currently exist in Ukraine — the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC-KP) of the Kyiv Patriarchate, the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP).

The first two churches take part in a Council at the level of their bishops ‘ councils, of the UOC-MP presented a private members of the episcopate, clergy and laity, according to the website of the UOC-KP.

Before the Cathedral in a Small temple of Sophia, served the hierarchical divine Liturgy, followed by registration of participants in the unification Cathedral.

By the beginning of the meeting to the temple came the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. In Kyiv on the unity Council has arrived the Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew. According to media reports, he will act as guest of honor.

It is expected that the outcome of the Assembly will be composed of a Ukrainian Church independent from the Moscow Patriarchate.

The new Church will be established on the basis of the Kyivan Patriarchate, the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church and joined the parishes of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.

The initiator of the formation of the new Church was made by President Petro Poroshenko, who in April 2018 was asked of Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople to grant autocephaly to the Ukrainian Church.
