Officially this post claimed by three people: the General Secretary of the CDU Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, the former head of the parliamentary faction of the conservatives, Friedrich Merz, and the Minister of health of Germany Jens span.

Angela Merkel led German conservatives for the past 18 years, since April 2000. On his retirement as leader of the CDU she announced in October. At the post of Federal Chancellor Merkel is a fourth term, it expires in 2021.
