A beauty contest among the albinos of Africa was held in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, 30 Nov. All participants — congenital absence of the pigment melanin, which is responsible for coloring skin, hair and eyes.

The purpose of the contest is to draw attention to the problem of discrimination and violence against people with albinism. According to the organizers, these people have to face serious problems. In particular, they are persecuted for the sake of ritual killings due in some African regions the erroneous belief that body parts of albinos make people richer. The world’s first beauty contest was held among albinos in Kenya in 2016.
