Ex-Deputy and businessman Leonid Maevsky was arrested on charges of extortion
The Tver court of Moscow sent under arrest of the former Deputy of the state Duma and businessman Leonid Maevsky, accused of extortion of $37.5 million, reported the correspondent of “Interfax” from the courtroom.

The prosecution Majewski filed under paragraph “b” of part 3 of article 163 of the Criminal code (extortion committed in order to obtain property in especially large size). He faces up to 15 years in prison.
According to investigators, the former Deputy acting in collusion with unidentified persons from 31 October to 8 November 2018 in Moscow demanded from the victims at least $37.5 million, threatening in case of refusal to distribute defamatory information. The case was filed on November 14, the day he was arrested and charged with a crime, the judge read out the case materials.
The meeting was held behind closed doors. The defense asked to close the process. Majewski at the meeting said that “there can be affected by interests of state security”.
Lawyers for the accused declined to comment. On recognized if Majewski’s guilt is not specified.
