As the name implies, the Park here is not easy. On its territory there are four different types of volcanoes: lava cone, cinder cone, shield volcano and stratovolcano. They are all existing, but dormant for over a hundred years.
Its name Lassen Mount received thanks to its largest volcano with a lava cone — Lassen-KPI. Thanks to its eruption in 1917 appeared the landscape that can be seen today: mud pots, bubbling hot springs, colorful toxic lake and one of the main attractions of the Park — the volcanic dunes.
Colorful hills was formed from the oxidation of volcanic ash during the eruption. Bright colors was due to the fact that the ash was deposited directly on the hot lava flows.
