The survey showed many Americans support sanctions against Russia

WASHINGTON, 20 Aug — RIA Novosti. Americans prefer diplomacy to sanctions in relations with Russia, according to the poll of Gallup.

Faced with the need to choose one of the options, Americans believe that it is more important to improve relations between the two countries (58%), and to take diplomatic and economic steps against Russia (36%).

Two-thirds of Americans say they follow the news about the alleged “Russian interference” in the elections in 2016, which Moscow denies.

While 36% believe that Moscow interfered in the elections and did not affect their outcome, 39% — that intervened and changed the results, and 16% say that elections in Russia did not intervene.

In the survey, which was conducted from 1 to 12 August, participated 1,02 thousand adult US citizens in all 50 States and the district of Columbia. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The survey was conducted against the background of deteriorating relations between the two countries and new rounds of U.S. sanctions against Moscow.
