The Family code of Turkmenistan imposed a ban on polygamy

ASHGABAT, 19 Jul — RIA Novosti. The Family code of Turkmenistan introduced a rule prohibiting polygamy, said on Tuesday the Russian government newspaper “Neutral Turkmenistan”.

The newspaper published the text of the law on amendments and additions to the Family code, signed by the President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. The adopted law supplements article 7 of the code a provision stating that “Turkmenistan has not allowed polygamy”.

“Under the plural marriage refers to cohabitation with two or more women at the same time when sharing the same household,” States the amendment. The present law shall enter into force on 1 September 2018.

At the same time, despite the fact that the majority of the population of Turkmenistan is Muslim, allowing men to have up to four wives, the country has always been criminalized polygamy. So, currently, under the Criminal code of Turkmenistan, the polygamist may be sentenced to a heavy monetary fine or correctional labor up to two years.
