Scientists have discovered a link between fasting and aging of cells
MOSCOW, may 4 — RIA Novosti. Biologists at mit have found that fasting helps to improve the regenerative capacity of stem cells of the intestine, reports MedicalXpress.
Scientists conducted an experiment involving mice: rodents were not fed for 24 hours, after which the researchers extracted stem cells of the intestine and grew them artificially.
As it turned out, after fasting in intestinal cells resulted in a change in the energy metabolism instead of glucose, they switch to digest the fatty acids. This greatly stimulated the emergence of new cells — the process of rejuvenation has doubled.
According to scientists, the study may contribute to the development of a drug with a similar action that will help elderly people suffering from infections of the gastrointestinal tract, and cancer patients after chemotherapy.
