The young man developed severe paroxysmal headache after he ate a chili pepper cultivar “Carolina Reaper”, listed in the Guinness book of world records as the hottest pepper in the world. The pain lasted several days and proved to be so unbearable that the man had to go to the hospital.

The time of treatment the pain still gripped the neck of the patient. At the hospital, doctors conducted a series of neurological tests, but they did not reveal violations. However, computed tomography showed that multiple arteries in the brain reduced.

This allowed to put the diagnosis of reversible cerebral vasoconstrictor syndrome. It is also called the thundering headache with cerebral vasospasm — it is manifested by flashes headache, which increase to a maximum intensity within a minute, and is characterized by narrowing of the arteries.

Syndrome may occur as a reaction to medications or drugs. In this case, the reduction of the arteries caused too spicy pepper. The symptoms gradually passed themselves — after five weeks, CT scan showed that the artery returned to its previous state.
