Verkhovna Rada renamed airborne troops in the airborne assault

It is clarified that the decision was made to avoid the abbreviation of the airborne forces.

KIEV, April 5. /TASS/. The Verkhovna Rada on Thursday adopted a law according to which the highly mobile airborne troops are renamed to assault. For the corresponding document “On amendments to some laws of Ukraine on defense” voted 236 deputies with 226 required.

According to the explanatory Memorandum, the decision was made to avoid the abbreviation of VDV (airborne troops), which is also used in Russia for the name of the Russian airborne troops.

Ukraine on 21 November 2017 for the first time celebrated the Day paratrooper. As explained in Kiev, the decision to move the festival from August 2, as in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and other CIS countries, due to the desire to abandon the Soviet past. During a speech on the occasion of the marine Day the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has awarded the first maroon berets, which replaced the traditional “winged infantry” blue. Then he announced that he will initiate the change of denomination of airborne troops in the airborne assault troops.
