Virtual reality added to real people

Startup Imverse showed a system that allows you to add in virtual reality with real objects.

With its help the user can see in the virtual space themselves and others and interact with them, for example, to shake hands, according to the publication TechCrunch.

Modern virtual reality helmets can create a fairly realistic image with minimal delays. But in the sphere of virtuality have not yet solved one of the main problems is the interaction with real objects. Prototypes of systems for such collaboration already exist, but mostly they focus on tactile sensations. For example, there is already a VR-glove with haptic feedback and the system of electro muscle stimulation that allows us to feel the size and weight of real objects.

Engineers from Swiss startup Imverse showed at the film festival “Sundance” the system to transfer the three-dimensional images of real people in virtual reality. The developers have not disclosed the technical details of the system, but in the demonstration video you can see that the movements are captured by multiple cameras of Microsoft Kinect depth located from the different parties.

It is interesting that, unlike other developments, it is not a virtual avatar, and the model based on real body image and clothing. The user can see a realistic model of their body and other people in the camera field of view. The developers have shown that it can help to see the interlocutor and even say Hello hand:

It is worth noting that in 2013, other engineers demonstrated a similar system, but with far less image quality. And in 2016, Microsoft demonstrated a system that can display a hologram of the interlocutor on the screen of augmented reality glasses, but it was intended to communicate with remote interlocutors, and not the physical interaction with them.
