In the ocean discovered a mysterious smoke ring

MOSCOW, 13 Dec — RIA Novosti. Scientists have discovered an unusual “smoke ring” on the ocean surface. A study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

Experts at the University of Liverpool discovered this phenomenon by analyzing the measurements taken from satellites, as well as data about surface temperature in the Tasman sea off the coast of Australia and in the South Atlantic.

The researchers suggested that the rings are a kind of oceanic vortices, the diameter of which reaches several hundreds or thousands of kilometers. Such turbulent air flows are quite common in the sea.

However, “smoke rings” rotate in opposite directions and at a speed ten times higher than all known types of vortices. In addition, they are able very quickly to move animals long distances.
