MOSCOW, October 25. /TASS/. The number of abortions in Russia over five years has decreased on 250 thousand About it on the Church-wide Congress on the social mission of the Minister of health of Russia Veronika Skvortsova.
“Through our work for 2016 on 58 thousand reduction in the number of abortions, and over 5 years — 250 thousand, i.e. by 25%,” she said.
The reduction in abortions is the result of joint work of Ministry of health and the Russian Orthodox Church, believes the Minister. “We opened 1.5 thousand centres of abortions in the consultations, maternity hospitals and perinatal centers” — said the Minister.
According to her, the abortion rate was declining not only in the city but also in rural areas. In the villages of maternal mortality remained high, partly due to a criminal abortion. The Minister noted that when the abortion is performed for non-medical institution, a woman risk of dying from uterine bleeding.

The health Minister added that the maternal mortality rate in rural areas remains much higher than in urban areas, what may contribute to abortions performed in non-medical organizations.
“The number of abortions reduced not only in cities large and small, but in the countryside, but we see the difference in maternal mortality,” — said the Minister.
“If in General, maternal mortality decreased almost by half in five years, it is three times higher while in rural areas. And we do see the fact, when in fact we are talking about criminal abortion, early abortion in non — medical organizations,” she added.
