Canadian “Magnitsky act” came into force

In Canada Royal visa received “the Law on victims of corrupt foreign governments,” also known as the “Magnitsky Act”. This was reported on the website of the Senate of the country.

This law is a version of American “Act on the rule of law and accountability name of Sergei Magnitsky”. The document will allow Ottawa to seize the assets and property of foreign nationals who may be involved in human rights violations, said RIA Novosti.

The Russian Embassy in Canada in his Twitter called the law “contrary to common sense”. According to the diplomats, he was “hastily adopted with the support of the fugitive fraudster and hated Russian people.” The name of the fugitive fraudster is not directly called, presumably, we are talking about William Browder, sentenced in absentia by a Russian court to 9 years in prison for tax fraud.

In may, the Russian foreign Ministry has warned Ottawa that the approval by the Parliament of Canada, local version of the Magnitsky act will cause significant damage to bilateral relations. According to the Ministry of the interior, such action will lose Canada, whose authorities prefer to isolate themselves from Russia instead of developing mutually beneficial cooperation, including in the economic sphere and the development of the Arctic.

Adopted in 2012 in the U.S. “Magnitsky act” imposes personal sanctions against several dozen Russians. The document is named by the name of the lawyer of Fund Hermitage Capital Sergey Magnitsky died in a Moscow prison “Matrosskaya Tishina” in 2009, and directed against persons suspected of involvement in his death.
