George Saunders was the winner of the Booker prize

The writer has received this award for his novel “Lincoln in the Bardo”.

LONDON, October 17. /TASS/. American writer George Saunders was the winner of the Booker prize (Man Booker Prize) for 2017. This was announced Tuesday evening at a ceremony in London city hall.

Saunders received the prestigious award in the field of English literature, for his novel “Lincoln in the Bardo” (Lincoln in the Bardo).

He became the second U.S. representative in a row, which takes away with him this prestigious award and outstanding prize of £50 million ($66.6 thousand).

In 2016, the award went to his compatriot the Floor Beetee.

Book 58-year-old American writer, who was better known for his novels, was a kind of study of death. It tells the story of how US President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) comes to the grave of his son, Willie, who died at the age of eleven years at the beginning of the civil war. At the cemetery, Georgetown Lincoln is in the intermediate state, which Buddhists call the “Bardo”, and leads an interesting and exciting conversations with the souls of dead people.

For the first time the awards ceremony was held in 1969. Until 2013 Booker prize was awarded to the author, living in one of the countries of the Commonwealth of Nations, Ireland or Zimbabwe. But then the jury was allowed to claim her writers from other countries for work written in English and published in the United Kingdom.
