The Syrian army has completed the operation to destroy the militants of the terrorist group “Islamic state” (IG banned in Russia) in the city of Mayadin. About it told the official representative of Russian defense Ministry major General Igor Konashenkov, reports TASS.
“Assault units of the Syrian army under the command of General Hassan Suhel, breaking the stiff resistance of terrorists in the Central and southern blocks, completely liberated the city,” he said.
Konashenkov added that Mayadin was the most powerful fortified area of terrorists in Eastern Syria.
According to him, the troops of General Suhela supported by the Russian aerospace defence forces are developing an offensive on ISIS.
“The defeat of terrorists in Medine created the necessary conditions for the escalation of the tactical success of the Syrian forces in the operational,” — said Konashenkov.
The militants seized Mayadin in July 2013. Until now, it was the largest settlement, which remained under the control of terrorists.
