In early October on the social network Snapchat has a new feature: users who have visited Central Park in new York city, the Champ de Mars in Paris or Hyde Park in London, can see the sculpture of the artist Jeff Koons in augmented reality.

In Central Park Snapchat has established a “Dog of balloons” — one of the most famous sculptures of Koons. In augmented reality it looks like this:

A few days later a group of new York artists published a picture in which the sculpture was a painted graffiti (also in augmented reality). “The first sculpture in augmented reality deserves to be spoiled the first graffiti in augmented reality”, — said the artist Sebastian Errazuris.

Should corporations be allowed to place what ever content they choose over our digital public space? Central Park belongs to the city of NY. Why should corporations get to geo-tag its gps coordinates for free? We know they will make money renting gps spots to brands and bombard us with advertisement. They should pay rent, we should choose to approve what can be geo-tagged to our digital public and private space. #augmentedreality #jeffkoons #sebastianerrazuriz #crosslab #digitalpublicspace

In fact, the artists were not hacked Snapchat, but simply recreated the “Dog of balloons” in a graphics editor, and then struck her graffiti. The whole process can be viewed on instagram of Errazuris.

Errazuris noted that Central Park belongs to new York. “Why corporations should be free to use its GPS coordinates? We know that they will earn, selling brands geotagged and is pulling us,” said Errazuris. According to the artist, the company should pay rent when I place objects in the digital space of the city — similar to real.
