V. Ivanov was born in 1929 in Moscow. The son of writer Vsevolod Ivanov. Was in evacuation in Tashkent (1941-1943). Graduated from high school in Moscow in 1946, and in 1951 the faculty of Philology of Moscow University.
Doctor of Philology (1978), academician in the Department of literature and language (2000). Director of the Institute of world culture of Moscow state University and Russian anthropological school, Russian state University for Humanities. V. Ivanov was one of the founders of the Foundation for fundamental linguistic research, foreign member of several foreign academies and scientific societies.
