Scientists in Chukotka “talk” with the whales, but don’t know what

Researchers at the Institute of Oceanology, RAS lost belugas signals into their “language” and got the answer. However, scientists do not yet know what they “talked” with whales.

Scientists month filming Beluga whales on video – camera and recorded their voices with a few hydrophones in the Anadyr estuary in Chukotka, according to the website of the program “Beluga — white whale”.

The recording device was descending steeply into the sea in a protective shell. The operation was made at night, when by the noise of human activity.

Although the “dialects” of various white whale populations are very different from each other, scientists have been able to reproduce coherent fragments of the signals of these animals and get answers from them.

“For example, the emitted signal of the animal is quite young belushka, which is now in the White sea, or the signals of the white sea animals, or of the Anadyr, and Beluga whales responded,” — said senior researcher Roman Belikov. He expressed the hope that after some time “will be able to understand what they are talking about Beluga whales”.
