In Catalonia, clashes of participants of a referendum with the police

In Catalonia, where today held a referendum on independence from Spain, clashes broke out voting with the Spanish authorities controlled police. Law enforcement authorities have blocked several polling stations and seize documents and ballot boxes. On one of the sites, police smashed glass doors to get inside.

Citizens are trying to break through police cordons, several people were injured. The exact number of victims is not yet known. The Spanish authorities claim that the police are authorized to remove “materials and items for voting,” however, police action is not aimed against the Catalans.

According to AP, Spanish police violently removed hundreds of citizens from a polling station in Barcelona, several people were detained. Eyewitnesses of the events photos and videos on Twitter.

The Spanish authorities consider the referendum void, claiming that the vote “illegal” and has “no international support”. Night, Spanish police closed a large part of the premises, which was placed for voting.

About an hour before the start of the referendum, the government of Catalonia allowed citizens to vote at any polling station. The participants in the referendum can also come with their papers printed on the printer.
