In Puerto Rico 126-meter high sculpture of Tsereteli survived after the hurricane “Maria”

Moscow. September 25. INTERFAX.RU — After the most powerful hurricane “Maria” swept through the American region, the work of the President of the Russian Academy of arts Zurab Tsereteli “the Birth of a New world” in Puerto Rico have remained intact, said the sculptor, “Interfax” on Monday.

“The whole world groaned when he saw on TV that the streets of the capital of Puerto Rico is littered with the wreckage of balconies and air conditioners, broken street lights, fallen power lines and dead birds. Few trees remained intact, most were broken off thick limbs, some uprooted. The highest sculpture in the world with a height of 126 metres — “the Birth of a New World” my work at the Arecibo resisted,” — said Tsereteli.

He recalled that the installation of the sculpture was accompanied with seismic and other terrain features.

The monument dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the sailing of the flotilla of Christopher Columbus and is one of two pair of single monuments of the project “How Europe found America.” The first sculptural composition “Birth of a New Human” was established in 1995 in Seville, Spain, from the shores where he set sail caravels of Columbus. The second was built in 2016, in accordance with the route of the flotilla, on the island of Puerto Rico, included in the group of Islands in the Caribbean, where in the XV century Columbus landed.
