Moscow does not pursue strategic goals to consolidate in Syria, said the special representative of the President of Russia on the Syrian settlement, Alexander Lavrentiev. He said this on air “Russia 24”, reports “Interfax”.

“For us, the goal [in Syria] — the fight against international terrorism, which poses a threat to Russian national interests”, — said the envoy of the Kremlin.

Lavrentiev noted that Syria continues to fight a lot of people from Russia and former Soviet republics. “We need to fight,” he added.

On 12 September the Minister of defence of Russia Sergey Shoigu on the instructions of President Vladimir Putin went to Damascus, where he held talks with senior Syrian leadership. The parties discussed issues of military and military-technical cooperation. The conversation also touched upon the topic of stabilization, functioning zones of de-escalation and humanitarian assistance to the population.

Armed conflict in Syria began in spring 2011. According to the UN, the victims were more than 220 thousand people.
