Merkel in conversation with Putin has approved the initiative of Russian peacekeepers

BERLIN, 11 Sep — RIA Novosti. German Chancellor Angela Merkel during a telephone conversation with President of Russia Vladimir Putin approved the initiative of the Russian Federation on peacekeeping mission in the Donbass, but said that it is necessary to amend the mandate, said government spokesman of Germany Steffen Seibert.

“Both parties discussed the Russian proposal for the UN mission in the Donbass. The Federal Chancellor welcomed the Russian initiative in principle, but pointed to the fact that there must be changes in mandate,” said Seibert.

During the conversation, held in the second half of the day, “it was agreed that the conflict around the nuclear weapons of the DPRK should be resolved peacefully,” added Seibert.

Russia’s envoy to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia said on Tuesday that Russia has sent to the Chairman of the UN Security Council and the Secretary-General draft resolution on the establishment of a mission to promote the protection of OSCE observers in the South-East of Ukraine. Consultation on the document will start at the expert level and on the level of permanent representatives.

Putin earlier said he supports the idea of sending peacekeepers to Ukraine, but we can only talk about the function of ensuring the safety of OSCE personnel, peacekeepers must be on the boundary line and no other areas.
