Merkel has threatened to review relations with Turkey

Angela Merkel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has threatened to review relations with Turkey after the Turkish security services detained two citizens of Germany. About it reports Reuters.

“We must respond to it decisively, — said Merkel, speaking at a business form in Nuremberg. — Given recent events, perhaps it is time to rethink our relations to a much greater extent than we expected”.

Two German citizens were arrested at the airport of Antalya on Friday, September 1. Their identities have not been disclosed. The Turkish authorities were not informed about the incident the German Consulate in Izmir, which learned about the arrest of German citizens through their own channels. What I suspect is unclear.

Currently in Turkish prisons, charged with political offences are 12 citizens of Germany. Four of them have dual citizenship.

The relationship between the EU and Turkey deteriorated after an armed coup in the country in July last year. The European Union has criticized the subsequent reaction of the Turkish authorities, mass arrests and other measures Ankara has suspended preparations for the opening of new chapters of the negotiation file on the accession of Turkey to the European Union.
