The German foreign Minister warned about the threat of “cold war 2.0”
Sigmar Gabriel believes that the world faces a “cold war 2.0”, and Germany is on the frontline in this new war. With trump and Putin, Germany had neighbors who believe “not because of law but the law of the strong”, the Minister said.
Foreign Minister of Germany Sigmar Gabriel said that Germany is on the frontline in a new cold war, and the Chancellor Angela Merkel has made a grave error, following the call of US President Donald trump and embarked on the path of rearmament. The head of the German foreign Ministry stated in an interview with Bild, according to Reuters.
According to the Minister, dealing with trump and the President of Russia Vladimir Putin, Germany got neighbors to the East and West, who believe “not because of law but the law of the strongest.”
“We are in a state of cold war 2.0. Right in the center. We were faced with a new phase of nuclear armament in the East and the West,” — said the Minister.
He also criticized Merkel’s decision to increase military spending to $70 billion. “I believe that this is a serious mistake,” said Gabriel.
Germany and other NATO members before the election trump promised to increase their defense spending to 2% of GDP. Despite the fact that most of the countries participating in the Alliance has increased its military spending, only a few reached the goal of 2%. And Germany is not yet among them, the Agency added.
