Accommodation in Japan the American missile defense system Aegis Ashore will undermine strategic stability in the Northern part of the Asia-Pacific region. This was stated by the official representative of Russian foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.

Russia closely “follows several years of discussion about the possible purchase of Japan, the United States missile defense systems”, said the diplomat. According to her, the last time Tokyo was inclined to favour the selection of Aegis Ashore. “From the beginning we clearly brought to Tokyo our concerns about such plans, pointed to the failure of the Japanese side to justify their progress to the missile and nuclear programs of the DPRK,” — said Zakharov.

In her opinion, the deployment of new systems “the ability to undermine stability in the North Pacific ocean”, a decision about their purchase, if adopted, “should be regarded as disproportionate to the real missile threats in the region.”

Aegis Ashore is a land-based stationary analogue system Aegis installed on ships. This system can shoot down ballistic missiles in the middle part of the flight trajectory outside the atmosphere.
