Russia urged North Korea to abandon nuclear program

Moscow. 5 Aug. INTERFAX.RU — Russia calls on DPRK authorities to abandon its nuclear program, said Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia.

“We urge North Korean authorities to dismantle its nuclear programs and return to NPT non-proliferation regime and the IAEA verification as well as to accede to the Convention for the prohibition of chemical weapons,” — said V. Nebenzia at the UN security Council after the adoption of the resolution on the DPRK.

“It should be clear that progress on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula would be difficult, while the DPRK will feel a direct threat to its security, because the North Koreans perceive military activity in the region, taking the form of regular large-scale maneuvers or exercises of the US and its allies, the deployment of strategic bombers, naval forces, including aircraft carriers,” he concluded.

On Saturday evening, the UN Security Council unanimously voted for sanctions against North Korea in connection with nuclear and missile tests.
