Russia ordered to pay 720 thousand euros group of inmates for a ban vote

The European court of human rights (ECHR) ordered Russia to pay compensation to a group of prisoners who were not allowed to participate in elections to the state Duma in 2011. On Thursday, July 20, RIA Novosti said the lawyer Igor Trunov.

“Prisoners are deprived of their electoral rights on the grounds that they are imprisoned”, — he said. The lawyer explained that the payment in the amount of 30 thousand Euro to 24 people.

Trunov said that the ECtHR considered that Moscow had violated article 3 of Protocol No. 1 to the European Convention (“Right to free elections”).

The Agency notes that the Russian justice Ministry has not yet commented on the situation.

Under article 32 of the Constitution of Russia, the citizens containing in places of imprisonment under a court sentence do not have the right to participate in elections. However, this rule does not apply to prisoners in the jail.
