Iranian mathematician and the only woman to be awarded the prize subject, the fields medal, Maryam Mirzakhani died at age 40. The cause of death was probably breast cancer. Mirzakhani presented the award in 2014, with the wording “for outstanding contributions to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and to the theory of spaces of their modules”.

Iranian mathematician and the only woman to be awarded the prize subject, the fields medal, Maryam Mirzakhani died at the age of 40 years at Stanford. On Saturday, July 15, the newspaper reports Tehran Times.

The cause of death was probably breast cancer, which found Mirzakhani four years ago. The last time she was in the hospital, as her condition deteriorated significantly.

Mathematics was awarded the prestigious international award in 2014. It noted the wording “for outstanding contributions to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and to the theory of spaces of their modules”. The prize is awarded every four years to scientists not older than 40 years.

In 1999 Mirzakhani moved to the United States. Five years later, she received a doctorate from Harvard University, and four years later became a Professor at Stanford University.

Among other achievements mathematics — the Blumenthal prize of the American mathematical society (2009), award named Ruth Sutter (2013) and the prize of the clay Mathematics Institute (2014).
